GlobeSurfer III 3G Wireless Gateway for Voice & Data
|
Drop your land line - Voice and Data Everywhere using AT&T Wireless
|
Description
Packed with new and unique features, the GlobeSurfer III pushed the boundaries of conventional
gateway routers. Using a GSM SIM card (like AT&T), you can now have your high-speed wireless
Internet with Wi-Fi and Ethernet ports for direct connection. Also included in the GlobeSurfer III is full
telephone functionality via RJ11 port. This means that you can connect a telephone (cordless or
conventional) and route voice calls through the router.
Not only do you get Internet (Wireless Wi-Fi), but you can plug your telephone (cordless or conventional)
into the RJ11 jack and make/receive calls using your GSM SIM Card.
Hard drives and printer can be connected via the integrated USB port. This means users have access
to a central storage system, allowing them to back-up critical files , or share files across the LAN. Two
Ethernet ports are also provided for direct conection of PCs.

Please Read
The GlobeSurfer III uses a GSM Data Enabled SIM Card. The SIM card and data plan are not included
with the GlobeSurfer III. AT&T is GSM and uses SIM cards. Also, make sure you have adequate
3G/EDGE cellular coverage in your area for data. The GlobeSurfer III requires a good 3G/EDGE signal.
There is a SIM card slot in the base of the unit for a GSM Data Enabled SIM card.
Important:
 | | Dedicated SIM Card required. Switching SIM cards between devices not supported.

Brief Product Review
Powerful Signal decided to put this new device through the paces. I went to the local AT&T store and
bought a SIM card with a voice and data plan. The SIM card goes into a slot at the base of the unit.
When the GlobeSurfer III is powered up the color screen on the front shows the initialization process. I did
not install any software on my PC. I accessed the GlobeSurfer III option/configuration screen by typing the
device's default IP address http://192.168.1.1 into my web browser. The option screen is excellent and I
found it very easy to use. It contains information and options for Internet, Telephone and Text Messaging. I
tested the wireless Wi-Fi features, telephone and text messaging. They all work without a problem.
WiFi Internet
Wi-Fi broadcast distance was good, it covered my house. Wi-Fi speed depends upon which data network
is available in your area. My signal strength was about -95dB which is on the light side. I did some speed
tests and got a download range of from 300kbps to 600kbps. This is quite normal because cell towers
fluctuate constantly. This was decent Internet access, much better then dial-up, but not as good as cable or
DSL. Remember this speed is not a function of the router, but of your service provider which is the cellular
data network. The GlobeSurfer III display screen shows who is connected to the router.
Telephone
This is the feature that separates this 3G router from the rest. If you ever thought of dropping your landline,
this is the feature that will make it happen. I plugged my cordless phone into the side of the GlobeSurfer III
unit and was able to make calls on the cordless phone, both incoming and outgoing through the router.
Calls go through the cellular network just like a cell phone. When you plug a telephone into the
GlobeSurfer III, your telephone number for the hose is the cellphone number assigned to the SIM card.
The GlobeSurfer III router has some very nice telephone features, such as incoming and outgoing call log,
call waiting and call forwarding options. The display screen on the front of the GlobeSurfer III shows if you
have missed any calls.
SMS Text Messaging
You can also send and receive text messages with the GlobeSurfer III. This is done on a PC by displaying
the option screen and going to the SMS section. All you do is type the message and cellphone number into
the screen and hit the send button. There is a Text log for sent and received messages.
External Antenna
GlobeSurfer III has an external antenna port. This allow you to attach a cellular antenna on the roof or in the
window. The cell signal at my house was in the range of -98dB to -101dB. I added a 12" 5dB magnet
mount external antenna in my window and got a bit better signal, around -95dB to -97dB.
Summary
In summary, I like the GlobeSurfer III. I like the way it is built, the features and the simplicity of the user
option screen. The telephone feature is going to make me think more seriously about getting rid of my
land line. I did not test the networked drive or USB printer options.
